| Labor Market Trends |
Green County has seen its unemployment rates decline over the past 5-6 years. While some counties have seen unemployment rates decline as a result of a shrinking labor force and economic growth, Green County has seen both its labor force and economy grow substantially since 1990. Jobs are being created at a rate of approximately 5 percent per year, led by manufacturing and services. The county’s proximity to Dane and Rock counties seems to play a role in this trend. Green County has seen the highest overall employment growth rates of any county in the Southwestern Wisconsin region. As seen in other parts of the country, Green County is currently experiencing an increase in unemployment. In addition, a Green County Workforce Profile was prepared by the Department of Workforce Development in December of 2000.

WAGE & SALARY INFORMATION
Compared to the rest of Wisconsin, wages paid to workers in Green County are slightly more than three - quarters of the statewide average. This is generally due to the number of workers who work in retail trade. The expansion of manufacturing coupled with the increasing demand for workers has lead to increases in wage rates for that industry, especially for higher-skilled occupations. Nevertheless, these wages are still lower than those paid throughout the state on average.
The Green County 1999 Labor Market Conditions Study collected information from 95 employers and 500 households in Green County. The report lists information regarding Cost of Labor, Demand for Labor and Characteristics of the Labor Supply. In addition, the State of Wisconsin – Department of Workforce Development conducted a state - wide survey in 1997. A summary of the Green County/SW Wisconsin information follows.
